Town Council

The Town of Change Islands was incorporated in 1951. Its Town Council offers full snow clearing, sanding and salting services during the winter, as well as sanitary waste collection once a week. They also provide street lights, public artesian wells, and an annual town clean up to keep our community a beautiful one.

A.R. Scammell School

A.R. Scammell Academy, named after the Newfoundland writer, Dr. Arthur Scammell who was born here and was renowned for his song entitled "The Squid Jigging Ground". For more information visit the A.R. Scammell Academy website at: www.arscammell.k12.nf.ca.

Change Islands Interpretation Centre

The Change Islands Interpretation Centre officially opened August 5, 2003. The facility houses a craft shop, tearoom, a geology interpretation center and serves as an information center for tourists. The main focus is on the geology interpretation as well as an interpretation of the community's heritage, the Labrador fishery and the seal fishery. The facility is built on a hill which overlooks the infamous 'Squid Jigging Grounds' that are the focus of the song by Art Scammell, a native son. The Pilot feature article: Change Islands Rocks

Library and Community Access Center

Change Islands has a Community Access Center at the local library. The Community Access Center offers free Internet use and computer training for the public. There are approximately 20 computers on site, as well as a laser printer, two digital cameras and a scanner. There is also a full library service available. If you would like to stop by, the library hours are as follows:

The Library and Community Access Center is located inside the A.R. Scammell Academy.

Medical

Change Islands Nurse Practitioner

Change Islands has a nurse, Medina Foley who came to the Island with her husband Greg, three kids, and her NL pony Trumpet. Medina has regular clinic hours and is otherwise on call twenty-four hours a day. The clinic can be found in the first building on the left on Tickle Point Road, next to the post office. The Clinic also has bi-weekly visits from a doctor on Fogo Island. In addition to the clinic, Change Islands has an emergency response crew that is trained to act in the case of an emergency. There is also a fully equipped vehicle to transport people off the island when needed.

Change Islands, with a population of 350, has a volunteer fire department consisting of twenty-three members, with Ross Hoffe as Fire Chief. The fire department has the following equipment: portable pumps, truck, oxygen, etc.
